The historic Well of St. Patrick is a structure built by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in Orvieto between 1527 and 1537 at the behest of Pope Clement VII, who—having survived the Sack of Rome—wished to ensure security in the event that the city where he had taken refuge came under siege.
